“Who are you? … It’s a dangerous question, you know. There’s never a good answer to it.”
– Lorien, Babylon 5 “Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?” (by J. Michael Straczynski)
Who am I?
I am the only child of my Mom and Dad. I am of mixed nationality and race. But that is where I came from, not who I am.
I'm a chemist, biologist, engineer, paramedic, and a writer. But that is what I've done and what I do, not who I am.
I am a husband to Nancy, an informally adopted brother to Floyd, a son-in-law, a brother-in-law, an uncle, a cousin, and a long time friend. But that is who I relate to, not who I am.
I am a poor follower of Jesus Christ, and painfully aware of how much I fail at that. But that is who I try to follow, who I believe in, not who I am.
I am a blogger, a rocket scientist, an astronomer, an arachaeoastronomer, a marathoner, a cook, a photographer, a keyboard player, a guitarist, a bass player, a quantum physicist, a keeper of parrots, an amateur radio operator, a reader of science fiction, a reader of crime novels, a movie fan, and a "Jack of All Trades." But those are my hobbies, not who I am.
I am a diabetic. I am depressed. I am on occasion obsessive. But that is what is wrong with me, not who I am.
I would be a father. But that is my faint hope, not who I am.
I am an outsider who wishes to belong but never can. Even this blog's title, "UnSpace," implies I am not of the same universe as everyone else. But that is where I do not fit in, not who I am.
In the end, as Lorien says, there is no good answer to the question, "Who are you?"
But I am the person who keeps trying to find answers, even to dangerous questions.
