These are some of the photos from John Edwards' campaign stop today at the Hill House in Pittsburgh. Lighting was terrible, but I managed to get some good photos.

After the main speech, Edwards did some interviews for the camera, including this interview with someone from CNN and a local interview.

Here's the traditional "candidate facing the cameras" shot:

Edwards was asked about the crazy blogger/photographer who was disrupting everything today:

He looks like a wax figure
MAybe you should have used that flash of yours
Edwards was the best political speaker I have ever seen in person. If Edwards looked at his notes, I didn’t catch him. There wasn’t the George W. pole-axed look. Far from being a frozen wax figure, he was animated. Part of the reason I shot mostly at 1600 ISO was that he moved so much. I needed the shutter speed.
I caught Edwards with some strange facial expressions which, in speaking looked quite normal but in stills looked strange.
If he looked like a wax figure, then the problem was indeed mine. His skin was shiny, though. I remember thinking he didn’t use any makeup, at least none that I could see a meter away with a zoom lens.
I tried to keep the use of flash to a minimum. CNN (or was it CSPAN? I might be wrong on that) and other news services were filming, and so I wanted to disrupt their videography as little as possible. I was in with the press and wanted to not mess with people doing their jobs.
One of my rules of photography is “You only get good shots by moving your butt — a lot!” I found myself picking some bizarre angles and then moving so the pros could get some shots from the same angle. Of course, one AIP student (a stringer for a small paper) pointed out that my shots tended to be artistic and not journalistic.
I’m rather proud of the photos, even if they were in low lighting and suffering from having to use 1600 ISO.
Then again, no one liked my photos of Jodine Costanszo, and my pictures of Tawanda Carlisle would be considered yellow journalism in most quarters. I could not get a good picture of that woman. Ravenstahl came out ok, but guys are easier to photograph than women.
Perhaps my niece ought to reconsider her choice of wedding photographer. She’s got over a year to change her mind.
These are cool. I like the one with his face down especially. Also, I think it’s a great experience to hear a political candidate speak in person. And don’t worry, your niece will probably have makeup on, and be focused on your camera! Advantages!
I didn’t mean that in a bad way… just pointing out that the photos looked like you were in a wax museum.
Great pictures and great subject! I like the man and wish he had stayed in the race…
